Friendly Match, Brighton, 5th September 2009

We travelled to Brighton on a bright sunny day for our inaugeral friendly match against Brighton Chess Club. Mostly outgraded, we lost 12-5, but there were some good performances: on the top four boards we scored 50% thanks to wins from Alex and draws from James and Jim, despite being outgraded by more than 20 points per board. Lower down the board order, Sydney and Johannes also scored good wins. Thanks to Jim Robinson, Club Captain for getting this event off the ground and doing all the organising. We hope that this will become an annual fixture.

Games to be completed by 31 May 2009. Rate of play: 36 moves in 1½ hours then 24 moves per hour.

Any game played within one month of the competition deadline must be played with a quickplay finish, in which case games are played to the first time control, followed by a 15-minute quickplay finish. Before the one month deadline, games may also be played to a quickplay finish, provided both players agree to this before play commences. Any adjournment played within one month of the competition must also be played to a quickplay finish, with the clocks set back 15 minutes when the next time control is reached.

On completion of a game the result should be entered on the appropriate chart on the noticeboard. Please also notify the tournament controller direct as this helps him monitor the progress of tournaments. This can be done by telephone to Derek Hadley (01322 666197) and messages can be left on his answering machine. All games to be completed by 31 May 2009.

Christmas Tournament-at-Odds, Tuesday 16th December 2008

19 players took part in our Christmas tournament, played at 19th century style odds. It made for an enjoyable evening's chess with buffet, drinks and a mystery prize each round. The tournament was deservedly won by Paul Efstathiou, who defeated Jim Robinson in the final round, receiving odds of pawn and two moves. Paul played very enterprisingly, sacrificing a piece for kingside attack. Thanks to Jim, Nigel, Paul and Tim for organising the tournament and drinks and food.

Christmas Tournament 2008

Tournament placings:

1st Paul Efstathiou 4½
2nd Jim Robinson 4
4th= A Cedrik 3½
