Civil Service Chess League

We enter two teams in the London Civil Service, Post Office and Municipal Chess League. Under the CS League's rules past or present employees of certain London government bodies and 'affiliate' players only, may play for the club in these teams. To be eligible for this league, GLCC players must have been employed at the Greater London Council, London Residual Body, current Greater London Authority, or as an 'affiliate' player must have been a member of the club for three full seasons.

GLCC has teams in the 2nd division (6 boards) and 3rd division (6 boards) of the League. The 1st team captain is Phil Zammit (tel 01277 622039) and the 2nd team captain is Paul Efstathiou (tel 07917 732080). In the 2006-07 season GLCC 1 finished bottom of Division 1 with 1.5/10 Mpts and were relegated to Division 2. We have high hopes of doing better in 2007-08: the passing of the Civil Service League 'affiliate' rule at the 2007 AGM (see above) will allow us to bring new blood into the team and the need to field only a team of six will also help the 1st team, and have a knock-on benefit for the 2nd team, who finished 9/9 with 1/10 Mpts in Division 3.

Postscript (2 June 2008) - it turned out to be an exceptional season for GLCC, with both teams winning their divisions. The trophies were presented at the Civil Service League AGM in May. The winning GLCC captains, Phil Zammit, (1st team, right) and and Paul Efstathiou (2nd team, left) are pictured with their silverware. Next season we'll be playing in the CS 1st and 2nd divisions respectively.
